Petroleum Jelly has found its far superior replacement. This is one of the most used products here at the Fat and the Moon household. St. John’s Wort, Calendula, Comfrey and Yerba Mansa infused sunflower oil have been used by our ancient grannies and grandaddies for their medicinal properties which encompass the gentle and effective. Calendula is great for supporting the bod’s natural repair processes. St John’s Wort soothes. Yerba Mansa is a less known herb, native to these here parts in CA, whose leaves promote the healthy proliferation of cells. Comfrey is the cheerleader doing impressive flips in the air in support of the skin repair team. This salve is great for scrapes, cuts, burns and bites as well as chapped and cracked hands. Fat and the Moon admits to having a slight preoccupation with dry shampoos. They are really, really cool. It ain’t great for the health of your hair and scalp to wash your hair every day, dry shampoo absorbs oil and add body so ‘no shower day’ can be ‘awesome hair day’. Yet upon inspection of the dry shampoos out there on the shelf, even the products deeming themselves ‘natural’ are loaded with aluminum. Applying aluminum to your armpits is bad, but to your head- where your brain lives, is just stupid. And breathing aluminum powder in? Faa-get about it.

Any powder you are applying that close to your grill should damn well be edible. Cocoa adds a yum smell and adds a little color so your hair doesn’t look dull and powdery, and the starch and clay absorb oil. The light brown color will work with all hair shades- I promise my fair-haired friends! A little lavender essential oil promotes a healthy scalp. Beware, the combination of lavender and chocolate may send you on an expensive chocolate bar binge.

Eye Coal is in pot form, is rich and dense. The sunflower oil base sinks into your skin, letting the pigment chill in place. Sunflower oil is light and smooth but rich at the same time. The beeswax gives the Eye Coal shape and staying power- and of course bee magic. Earth based, mineral oxide pigment and is saturated, beautiful and safe for the bod.

Because the Eye Coal is in pot form, the color can be rich and dense, something one sacrifices when eyeliner is in a stick and needs more wax to keep its shape. The sunflower oil base sinks into your skin, letting the pigment ‘dry’ in place. Sunflower oil is one of my faves, light and smooth but rich at the same time. The beeswax gives the Eye Coal shape and staying power- and of course bee magic. The mineral oxide is the pigment and is not only beautiful but safe for the bod! My goth sisters out there can even use it for lipstick while they rock out to Type O Negative (wouldn’t suggest anything I haven’t tried myself!).

Apply with a makeup brush for more defined Cleopatra looks. A tip dear friends! When applying the Eye Coal with a make up brush first apply a bit of face powder or cosmetic clay to your eye lid starting at the base of your lashes. The Clay/ powder will give the Eye Coal something to sink into and will keep your liner on sharper and longer. For that mysterious smokey appeal, apply with a squeaky clean finger on the inner rim of your bottom eye lid then close your eyes together hard to get the coal on the top inner lid and smudge the way you like.
